There are many types of computer security that you can utilize when connecting to the internet. Having your pc connected to the internet although both enjoyable and useful, can expose our system to many different types of online predation. 

There is no single solution for problems with computer security. The best thing you can do is install a multi-layered security system. Even the simplest solutions can provide you with fairly adequate computer protection when used in combination with several other protective measures.

Use your internet service provider as your first source of protection. some ISP’s will provide antivirus and antispam software, as well as a firewall. Do not, however, rely strictly on these solutions.

Most web-based e-mail services are much more secure and reliable, so a good idea may be to used one and then forward the clean e-mail to your regular e-mail service.

Another option may be your broadband modem (if you have high-speed internet). Most modems come with a built in firewall for increased computer security. When you sign up for high speed, you should ask the ISP if this option is available.

Firewalls are necessary for blocking both inbound and outbound attacks. Always have your own operating system firewall installed and turned on, whatever they provide.

Something to consider when looking at computer security is that most virus attacks are targeting windows based products. These include Outlook, Outlook Express, and Internet Explorer.

It may be a good idea to switch to a different operating system, e-mail program, and/or browser. Eudora and Firefox are two such browser and email programs.

Antivirus software is good for scanning your hard drives and any removable disks that you may attach to your computer. They also scan incoming and outgoing e-mails to ensure that they are not infected with a virus.

Anti-trojan software is an addition to, not an option to anti-virus software. It is simply an add-on to protect your system from a Trojan horse attack.

Anti-spyware programs will do the same thing and can often be acquired for free. Ad-ware is a good antispyware scanner that is availabe free online.

There are many privacy software programs that will provide you with enhanced computer security. This software can stop spam, clean your browser, manage your cookie storage, restrict the sites that children can view, and block banners, pop-ups, and ads.

Many software developers offer internet security suites that combine all of the above features into one package. While these suites may prove to be a little on the expensive side, they will be well worth the cost if you are able to block unwelcome intrusions by hackers.
